Domingo Rodriguez

ME Rodriguez Funeral Home has been a family run business serving San Antonio from the near west side for more than 75 years. The philosophy of ME Rodriguez Funeral Home has always been “To help families at the time of need by keeping prices affordable, especially during hard times.” This philosophy was apparent right from the beginning when ME Rodriguez was established by Domingo S. Rodriguez in 1921. Domingo Rodriguez charged only $10.00 for a funeral and let people pay him 50 cents at a time. Such cut rate pricing was vigorously opposed by those who were trying to sell standardized and high priced

funerals. Domingo S. Rodriguez steadfastly refused to raise his rates, but his strenuous resistance took a heavy toll. In 1932, he had no alternative but to close the doors at 820 S. Laredo. Later that year Domingo died. 1932, his widow, Martina Equin Rodriguez, decided to continue the family tradition by re-opening ME Rodriguez Funeral Home at a new location, 901 El Paso. Seven years later in 1939, the U.S. Government acquired the property and built on it what is now known in San Antonio as the Alazzan Apache Courts.

Martina took the money the government gave her for the land and purchased another property at 511 Guadalupe Street. This location has been the home of the family business to this day. Martina managed the funeral home until 1968. Upon Martina’s retirement, her daughter, Paula E. Rodriguez, became the new owner and president. Martina passed away in 1970. Paula has been active in the family funeral home business since she was 15 years old. She recalls when the family lived on the second floor of the funeral home and still had a workshop where caskets were handcrafted up until 1970. In 1989, the funeral home went through renovation that modernized the building completely while maintaining the original look and charm.
